Women’s Health - Healthy Aging - is it possible?….

Many factors influence healthy aging. Most of us aren't blessed with good genes and need to incorporate other ways to affect our aging healthily. Exercise, a nutritious diet, regular doctor's appointments and caring for our mental health all lead to overall increased wellbeing. But what are other, not so obvious factors contributing to our overall health, and how can we make positive changes in our wellness regime?

Sleep Hygiene - Sleep quality matters not only for our physical health but also for our mental health as well. A recent study looked at 8,000 people, which showed that individuals in their 50s and 60s who got less than 6 hours of sleep each night were at risk of developing dementia later in life. Poor sleep was also a contributing factor in worsening depression in older adults.

Following a regular sleep schedule, each day and avoiding napping later helps in getting a good night's sleep. Removing screen time 1 hour before bed and sleeping in a cool room also improved sleep quality. Not getting a good night's sleep has adverse effects in increased obesity, insulin resistance and heart disease. The bottom line, sleep plays a critical role in healthy aging.

Taking Care of Your Mental Health - is essential to your overall health and quality of life. Through the recent pandemic, mental health for many people has been negatively impacted. Living and managing social isolation, stress, loneliness, depression has been challenging for many. Losing contact with family and friends has left many people feeling isolated and lonely.

Several studies show that older adults who are socially isolated and experiencing loneliness are at a higher risk for heart disease, depression and cognitive decline. According to another study, socially isolated older adults experienced more chronic lung conditions and depression than those with a socially supportive network.
